Dealing with a clogged garbage disposal?
February 18, 2014
Tip of the week #3
A jammed or clogged garbage disposal can be a frustrating problem. But, generally it can be fixed in a few simple steps.
Step 1. Make sure your disposal is in the off position, by either unplugging the unit or setting the power switch to off.
Step 2. If your disposal doesn't make any noise at all when you flip it on then either the unit is burned out and needs to be replaced or you have tripped the electrical circuit. There are two circuits that may have been interrupted, there is a built in circuit breaker on the bottom of the disposal, press the red button to reset it. The other circuit is the main breaker on your house. Find the electrical panel to your home and look for any that may have been tripped and reset them.
Step 3. Find the Allen wrench that came with the disposal and place it in the whole in the center bottom of the disposal, turn the wrench several times in each direction until it moves freely.
Step 4. Turn on your water and turn on your disposal to test. Generally, your disposal will now be working again.
If your disposal is still not working, it's time to call the plumber, you may need a new one.
